We regret that Alps MD-5500 printers are no longer in production, and are no longer sold
The Alps MD-5500 printer is the only consumer priced printer available in the world that can print white, as well as metallic and foil gold or silver.
Alps Supplies are currently the only reseller offering the Alps MD-5500 with English drivers. All other resellers offering the Alps MD-5500 can only supply them with Japanese drivers.
Dye Sublimation
With the addition of the Dye Sublimation Upgrade Kit, the MD-5500 becomes the MD-5500P, capable of producing continuous tone prints using the dye sublimation cartridges and paper. Dye Sublimation can not be used for printing decals on waterslide decal paper.
Notes on using the printer with an Intel Mac: We have successfully used the printer on an Intel Mac, by loading Windows XP in a VMWare Fusion virtual machine. XP recognised the printer, and loaded the USB drivers from the driver CD automatically. This seems to be a viable alternative for owners of newer Macs. For a free alternative, VirtualBox from Sun Microsystems is a possibility.
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
The power supply for the Alps MD-5500 printer handles 100-115V only.
The printer can be plugged directly into mains power sockets in the USA or Canada, but most other countries will require a step down transformer rated at at least 100W
